When God Remembers You
The Bible describes seasons of favour in many ways, but they share the same marks: overflowing joy, breakthroughs, miracles, and the goodness of the LORD. One of its names for this season is the time of divine remembrance.
"And GOD remembered Rachel, and GOD hearkened to her, and opened her womb. And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, GOD hath taken away my reproach: And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son." (Genesis 30:22-24)
Rachel's long wait
Rachel's womb stayed closed for years. There can be many reasons for that. It might have been a biological cause, or GOD may have allowed it for a while so that His power could be seen more clearly.
Rachel was the love of Jacob's life, yet she had no children. Her sister Leah, on the other hand, started having children almost as soon as she married Jacob. Imagine being barren while the women around you are fruitful. It is hard to picture the ache of that.
Rachel was so desperate that she said she would rather die than stay childless:
"And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children; or else I die." (Genesis 30:1)
When a problem makes death sound like a relief, it is a heavy burden indeed. Jacob and Rachel did everything a couple could possibly do, and nothing worked.
When human effort runs out
Sometimes you have tried everything and the answer still has not come. Only the favour of GOD can change the situation then, and when Rachel's time of favour came, the LORD remembered her.
Before that time arrives, it can feel as though you have been forgotten. People may even whisper that you lack the skill or wisdom to fix your own problem. You may feel abandoned by both GOD and people. Rachel felt exactly that way.
But in the moment of favour, the book of remembrance was opened for her.
It is striking to read the words "GOD remembered Rachel," as if the all-knowing GOD could ever forget anything! Yet that is how it feels from the human side. While the season of favour is still ahead, it can seem that GOD is not thinking of you at all, and your prayers seem to bounce off an invisible wall above you.
Then GOD called Rachel's case to mind, listened to her prayer, and opened her womb. In His time of favour, GOD answers prayers that have been waiting for years and removes problems that have lasted a lifetime.
The end of reproach
Rachel said that GOD had taken away her reproach. When GOD decides to favour you, reproach cannot stay in your life.
For Rachel, the reproach was barrenness. For Naaman, the captain of the Syrian army, it was leprosy. For the prophet's widow, whose creditors were about to take her sons because of a debt she couldn't pay, it was poverty.
Whatever your reproach may be, the LORD will take it away in the time of His favour.
